Dear Ben and Jerry: I had this once, in 1986, in your first store in Burlington, Vermont. I was with my closest friends from college and it was in March. We took a girls trip before graduation. Back when we were so young. It was a crazy fun weekend. The memories of being friends and being so ready for life are still as strong as my memory of this ice cream. It’s the first time I’ve attempted to make it since 1986, it won’t be the last. Thank you for that memory.
Chocolate Orange Cointreau Fudge Ice Cream
3 cups milk
1/3 cup dark cocoa powder
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
dash salt
2 tablespoons finely chopped orange zest
7 ounces great quality dark chocolate* chopped
1/4 cup Cointreau
- Make the base by combining milk, cocoa, sugar, egg yolks, salt. Whisk together and heat gently to form a custard. Off heat.
- Stir in the zest and dark chocolate. Whisk vigorously to melt and mix in the chocolate. Pout into a container, cover with saran and chill.
- Churn in an ice cream maker. When almost done, add the Cointreau to mix in. Put in a container and cover to harden in the freezer.
- Reverently place scoopfuls into your bowl and think fondly of some of your most favorite memories while you make some new memories.
Cheers
